Collin writes: "Currently, I have become the newest member of The Blue Man Group and can now be seen with the Chicago company at the Briar Street Theatre. Along with the new year will come a move to the Las Vegas show, which performs at the Venetian Hotel and Casino. In the past year ,I have also had the opportunity to be seen in New York City with the Pearl Theatre Company’s productions of The Cave Dwellers and Biography. Along with these exciting events a small dream of mine to be seen on the big screen was fulfilled with the release of the Julie Taymor-directed film Across the Universe."

Binkley, Howell
Drama
Class of 1977

2006 Tony Award for Jersey Boys

1993 Tony Award nomination for Kiss of the Spider Woman

Howell Binkley doesn't categorize himself: he is simply a lighting designer. Broadway, Off Broadway, regional theatre, dance — it's all the same to him: a passion.

Binkley's design approach is heavily influenced by his early career, which is rich in dance.  Binkley was lighting supervisor for the Paul Taylor Dance Company. It was there that he met choreographer David Parsons and started a dance company in 1986.

“Some people tell me — and I think they're right — that I take dance lighting into my theatre work. It's all about the focus: Where does the eye go? How are we training the audience's eye to focus? Do we want it on this dancer here or do we want it on the cyc? In my work I try not to lose that focus of where that eye should be.”

Williamson, Kevin

Bullock, Jamie
Professional Acting/Theatre Education
Class of 1998

'Beach Party' is coming to North Carolina. We are the opening night film at the Nevermore Film Fest which is being held at the Carolina Theatre

I would love for you to come. It's Friday Feb 23rd at 7pm and Sat Feb 24th at 5pm. (Bring everyone you know.)

We want to start this buzz in NC. It makes sense, a lot of the cast/ crew grew up or were professionally trained there and we are playing in a theatre that is smack dab in the middle of 3 huge campuses, Duke, State and Chapel Hill. As a very small independent film, our only hope to see any success is through a couple of ways, 1) we build interesting press that creates awareness 2) we find an audience that goes crazy for the film, is tapped into the world digitally and is able to spread the word about the film like wildfire."

Perry, Timm
Professional Acting
Class of 2001

I have some news from the world of a working actor: After having an audition for a background character in a Burger King commercial, the casting directors asked to see me again during callbacks for the featured character and after 2 callbacks I got the part! So, now you're looking at the latest addition to the Whopper Family,.....Spicy Chicken Sandwich! I had an 8 hour shoot yesterday, and the commercial may start airing 2-3 weeks from now. The entire audition and callback process was improv(maybe a note for your students?). Well, there you go! Thanks for staying in touch and send my best to the students and faculty of the Theatre and Dance Department!

Go Pirates!

Bradford, Rob
Professional Acting
Class of 2006

I'm currently doing motion capture and voice over work for a company called 321Launch. The company utilizes the same technology that created the "Lord of the Rings" 'Gollum' character to make mostly test commercials for ad agencies with a few other random spots for different things, the most exciting being a 3D animated series called 'Evil Train'.  As an actor, I wear a "mo-cap" suit which is fitted with reflective markers that reflect back all of my movements (down to my slightest eyebrow twitch) to the 14 cameras situated around the motion capture room.  The fourteen cameras are used to create a completely 3D image of me which is then layered over with the character and is placed in whatever the setting is for the scene. I'm their full-time actor, so I come in every morning, suit up, and shoot whatever they need. In the past month that I've worked there I've shot over 15 commercials for companies like Kit Kat, Trident, Dentyne and Gillette and we have finished filming the first episode of 'Evil Train' which should be available online after post-production.   I've actually just recently used the commercial copy experience that I've been getting from this job to land myself a commercial agent. So, who knows, I might get called in for a commercial I've already done!

Lisa Redding
Musical Theatre
Class of 2006

Last February (as a senior) I went to UPTA in Memphis and got a number of callbacks.  Out of the callback interviews I had 4 job offers on the spot.  One of which, was in Wichita, Kansas at the Crown Uptown Dinner Theatre.   While in Kansas I was in "Pickin and Grinnin" , in which I sang songs by Patsy Cline and Martina McBride; then was Woman #1 in "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change"; then "Singing in the Rain"  playing the lead role of Kathy Seldon.  While in Wichita I got an offer from a theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for a 6 month contract, and and have been doing 2 shows a day, 6 days a week.  Our show here is a musical revue and includes segments from the Golden Age of Hollywood, a 1970's section (where I sing "Respect" and "Aint No Mountain High Enough"), a country section (where I sing a Dixie Chicks song, a Patsy Cline song, and a Patty Loveless song), and then a patriotic section and our finale.   This show is also very choreography-intensive. Next came a call from Carnival Cruise Line offering me a 9 month contract aboard the Carnival Celebration, starting in September. I will rehearse for 4 weeks in Miami and then be cruising the Bahamas for 8 months!

I'm so incredibly thankful for the training I received at ECU.  I know a lot of people go straight out of high school and try to do these things and I know I wouldn't have survived.   I feel prepared for everything this business has to offer because of the experience and training that I got in my years at ECU.

JT Pitt
Acting
Class of 2007
First off, out of the gate, I got cast as a principal character on a
show called Whitaker Bay, a national TV show which shoots down in
Wilmington and airs nationally on the WGN super station network every
Saturday at 11:30 am, and internationally on NBC in 75 countries.
Next, I worked in a principal role in the Dick's Sporting Goods
holiday commercial which showed on a national market and can be seen
on the Dick's web sight under news and commercials. After that, came a
national Coke Zero commercial as a principal. I was the only talent
from NC in this shoot. Almost every single NASCAR driver on the Nextel
Cup series was in the commercial! It was a blast! 3 national spots
just 7 months out of ECU! I… feel very lucky to have learned the
invaluable information which your Professional Preparation class has
taught me! I have put it to use in NC and plan on moving to LA in
August to see if the process will work in a bigger pond. On Whitaker
Bay my character's name is David Visted.

Arianne Ritchie Collins
Professional Acting --2001

Hello John! I was watching Matlock the other day and thought of you and it inspired me to send you an email.  I hope this finds you, your family, and the theatre dept. family doing well.  Kevin and I have been in Miami, Fl now for over 3 1/2 years.  I have been working for the same children's theater I asked you for advice on so many years ago and I am having a blast.  Not only have I been performing for them in their shows but 3 years ago I accepted an office manger position which has since turned into Marketing Director and assisting our Managing Director and
Artistic Director.  I have really taken a liking to learning about what it takes to run a $500,000 touring children's theatre.  It's crazy because I never thought when I graduated I would be involved in running a theatre company.  But here I am assisting in grants, directing shows,
painting props and scenery, casting shows, sewing costumes, working tech at our field trip theatre locations, designing marketing promo, jumping into the bird costume and filling in for a sick actor, writing press releases, teaching acting to kids, writing plays, cleaning toilets, scheduling our programs at schools.... and the list goes on and on.  I want to first say... thank you!  Running a theatre company is hard!!  I never realized what you had to do in order for our program to function while I was at ECU.  And for making it what it is.... I Thank you!  I wanted to share with you a complement my boss gave the ECU staff the other day.  We have been in the process of putting up a new show (staring both the Artistic Director and Managing Director) and
moving our office spaces... needless to say it has been quite chaotic! Mimi (the artistic director) said to me that both her and Ed were so grateful to have me here.  That no matter what job they give me it gets done - and it is done right.  Sometimes even before they ask for it. My answer was... that was what I was trained to do!  Her response was... You were trained right by the BEST! ... and for that I Thank you!  I may not be singing on Broadway , staring in a blockbuster
movie, or landing national ads...  but I am using all of the tools and knowledge I was given by my teachers to be the best "Everything-position person" I can at Fantasy Theatre Factory.  And I know that would not have been possible without ECU!  I am enjoying being on the business side of things... not that I don't miss being on stage.  I am so thankful for the moments when something happens and I have to step in.  I find that these moments keep me honest - keep me grounded – and reminds me of my roots.  But I love this new adventure... and I am making theatre happen.  And for the 100th time in this email... Thank you!
